100 Words - The Package

Another motel morning. Breakfast at the diner across the street. Toast, bacon and scrambled eggs. For 30 minutes life is good and normal again. 400 miles of bad road ahead. Then the other ocean. Package delivered. Unemployed again.
I know, “What’s in the package?” Don’t know. I didn’t used to want to know. Now I do, and that’s bad news in this business. It’s just my job. Don’t kill the messenger. If I open it they’ll know, and then they’ll kill me. Or not. Maybe it’s harmless. Priceless keepsakes.
Maybe I can get a job pumping gas. That sounds safe.
