100 Words – Shock

The shock to his hand wasn’t painful, but surprising and confusing. The mechanic’s laughter was infuriating, but he tried to ignore her. He took several deep breaths cursing the car’s faulty wiring under them. None of this would be nearly as bad if he hadn’t quoted grandpa, “If ghosts are real may lightning strike me down.”

“You have to watch where you put those wrenches. You non-believer.” She took the wrench from his hand and finished tightening the battery terminals. “Come with me to the funeral.”

“Who died?”

“It doesn’t matter.” She closed the hood. “At funerals you get ghosts.”
