I walked twice to the left around the cottonwood tree. I felt like a fool, but what did I have to lose? I walked around again, remembering that my superstitious old grandmother told me to never do this. She told me to always walk to the right, but a beautiful woman tells me to go left, I go left.
Then the prairie dogs screamed. The cows ran away. The crows became silent. The woman who promised me sex, riches and more was gone. The sky grew dark. It got way cold. Winter came very early that year. It never left.
