November 2003

Goals for this month
I've decided that the goals I've been setting are not good. They have all been external things over which I had little control. So I've reset my goals for the month.
  • Do shows I enjoy doing.
  • Perform in at least two new Venues. (Already did one.)
Mock Cafe - 11/01/2003

Cool happy joy fun. Small crowd, but I did almost all new material and most of it worked. I did a pile of ad-libs.

Waves Smokehouse and Saloon, San Jose - 11/02/2003

Despite the name there is no food there so eat before you go. Good stage. Good sound system. Weird lighting. DJ brings you up which is cool. The crowd was very small, but I got to do a nice long set and kept them laughing with just a few lulls. I pulled some old material out. Some of it worked, some didn't. Made a nice connection with some audience members. The host did 5-10 minutes between each comedian which slowed the pacing of the show. His story about his friend beating up a transexual was a bit tough to follow.

Mock Cafe - 11/08/2003

Weird negativity tonight. I'm not sure if it was the harmonic convergence or the start of Ramadan or what, but many of the comedians were surley. Tom Smith kept pretending to kill me. At one point I found that the front door was locked, preventing any would be audience members from entering.

I went up with no real plan on what I was going to do. For once it worked fairly well. Unfortunately I started in on a long story three minutes into my set, so i had to jump out of it awkwardly, but it went OK.

Last Day Saloon - 11/12/2003

An odd night. I should have had fun, but it just didn't happen. On the surface it was just like Waves. If I was paying attention though, I would have seen the differences and embraced them. I'll have to do this show again in a few weeks and run with it. That said, if this place ever attracts an audience for the comedy show. It will be a killer show.

Mock Cafe - 11/15/2003

I'm not sure what to say about tonight. Severe non-commitment from the audience, and from myself. I think my latest surge of comedic energy has run its course. The dark places have been creeping their way out of the recesses. The writing has clawing to be let out. It will always be this way I imagine. The pendulum swings again. Not really a pendulum though. That implies a regular swing to a repeating distance. My swings get wider with each modulation.

Mock Cafe - 11/29/2003

No show tonight because of the holiday. Boo!

Writing - 11/30/2003

You may have noticed the dirth of writing entries lately. I've gone back and forth with all concepts of writer's block. Finally an odd bit of stuff prompted me to write a story. This story drug a bunch of stuff out of my subconscious. Foul stuff I wish didn't exist in there. The up-side is that it has washed away the writer's block. I've pounded out a bunch of stuff over the last few days. Good, fun stuff devoid of any inner censorship.
