January 2000

Mid Nov. through Early January
I had pneumonia. I did a few shows but they did not go well because I was coughing so much.

Jan 15 - Java N More
OK Set. Trying out some new things. Some worked, some didn't. Got a big laugh from one of the few dick jokes that I do.

Jan 15 - Mock Cafe
Better Set. I love having a real audience. I refined some stuff from the Java N More set, and used a few stock bits to fill the gaps. I've been studying how Nichols and May used to develop their material. They started off with pure improv. They would keep what worked, and replaced what didn't. That's a gross over-simplification of course.

Jan 22 - Java N More
I've got to get out more. Once a week is not enough! Pretty good set. The game show riff went NO WHERE. But these things happen. The other new material went well, but the restaurant bit needs to be tightened up.

Jan 23 - Mock Cafe
Very Good set. Good audience. I had some very good ad-libs.

Thoughts - Jan 23
In case you haven't heard yet, there was a special guest at the Mock on Fri Jan 21. Robin Williams stopped by and did a set. I had heard he was prepping new material to take on tour. It's good to see him in the trenches.

Also; As you may have noticed, I tend to over-analyze everything I do on stage. But something I noticed last night. I'm having fun. That's the most important thing.

Java N More - Jan 29
I have got to get out more than once a week. I've got lots of good new material, but I'm not getting enough stage time to develop any of it. Really ragged set, but had a few gems. I had what I thought was a wild idea for a bit about myself going out in public in drag. In the bit I ask other guys if they have thought of this. I expected that most of them would say no, but nearly all of them were nodding their heads yes. Maybe that's just because this is San Francisco, but it made the joke much funnier than I expected.

Mock Cafe - Jan 29
Another great audience. I didn't start off too well, but by the end of the set I had won the audience back.
