February 2000

Feb 5 - Java N More
Great set. OK, great may be a bit strong, but I wasn't even sure I was going to go out tonight. I was tired and had nothing really funny in mind. I forced myself to go because I've only been getting out once a week, and didn't want to miss my only shot at doing comedy for the week. So I put together a few rough ideas I wasn't too thrilled about. When I got the Mock to sign up I was talking to some other comedians and got a few ideas for possible bits.

So I get on stage and I go off on this weird tangent about my brush with homosexuality. This is not something I ever expected to talk about, but there I was on stage telling total strangers about my darkest thoughts and fears and stuff. And they loved it. A couple of pedestrians wandered in, and they came over after my set to tell me how much they liked my set.

Feb 5 - Mock Cafe
The energy of the crowd was low during the first few comedians, so I fell back on this interview I read with Phyllis Diller. In it she described how to grab an audience. You know what; It worked. It's amazing how just a few small things can help create a connection with the audience. And these are things that don't interfere with my material or personae. I'll see if I can find the interview and post it to the web site.

So I had another great set. Got some very good laughs. It's a good feeling that the chances I'm taking on stage are paying off. I've never been so honest and intimate with audiences and they are responding. I'm still a long way from what I know I'm capable of, but I'm making progress.

The only thing that worries me is that with this level on intimacy with the audience, when I bomb, and we all know that happens no matter how good you are, it will hurt alot more than in the past.

Feb 10 - Brainwash
Pretty Good Set. Not many non-comedians, but I got some good responses from the people in the front row. Tried some new material that wasn't very well developed.

Feb 12 - Java N More
Not that great. Tried a whole bunch of new material. Not mush of it worked.

Feb 13 - Mock Cafe
Pretty much the same. Got some good laughs, but my material was week, and I wasn't quit up to speed on my delivery.

Feb 17 - Brainwash
Good Show. I had a good set, but by the time I went up there were only six non-comedians in the audience. Five of them were laughing though. I'm still suffering from a lack of development time on my material.

Feb 18 - Voodoo Lounge
Hell Gig! Most of the audience was there for a birthday party, and did not want to be bothered by the geeks on stage. At times there were audience members who were into the show, but most of them were chased away by one comedian who was extremely unfunny. I went up last and was actually able to grab the attention of the party goers. Then I lost them. It was my fault. Looking back I can see how I lost them. That won't happen again.

Actually I have to say it's a nice room. Good stage, decent sound, and good audience placement. Hopefully the crowd will develop.

Feb 19 - Java N More
Decent set, great crowd. Just comedians, but they were all paying attention and laughing.

Feb 19 - Mock Cafe
I hosted tonight. Thanks Mike. It was fun. Small crowd but some good laughs.

Feb 27 - Thoughts
No shows this week. Had to take of family stuff.
